Welcome to our Restaurant

مطعم ياهلا – Yahala Mataam is Arabic for Welcome Restaurant.

The idea for Yahala Restaurant came after sampling the food cooked by Syrians living in York. An Arabic feast full of flavour, recipes handed down many generations; cooked for the first time in the City.

Yahala Restaurant is a Pop-up restaurant, opening up for one night a month. It started as a partnership project between the Refugee Council, York City Church and a group of gifted chefs from Syria.

Afghan Pop-up Restaurant 6.30pm Friday 24th June (fully booked).

During refugee week we’re offering you the opportunity to taste a different cuisine, hear stories from another culture and make a difference for those stuck in conflict in another land. In collaboration with the University of York and a new team of Afghan nationals, we invite you to join us for a traditional Afghan meal and much more.

The evening will start with an exhibition of artwork by photographer Andy Barnham, entitled “We Are Here, Because You Were There: Afghan Interpreters in UK “ at 6.30pm. We also have a number of short talks throughout the evening considering the situation in Afghanistan currently and the experience of Afghan refugees settling in the UK.

Food will be served at 7.15pm

This meal will be a fundraiser, with all the profits from the evening going to help Afghan nationals who are stuck in the country.
