Welcome to our Restaurant

مطعم ياهلا – Yahala Mataam is Arabic for Welcome Restaurant.

The idea for Yahala Mataam came after sampling the food cooked by Syrians living in York. An Arabic feast full of flavour, household recipes handed down many generations; cooked for the first time in the City.

Yahala Mataam is a Social Enterprise hosted by York City Church. It’s mission is to give opportunity, build confidence & instil dignity in the lives of Refugees and Asylum Seekers in York. It does through a Pop-up restaurant, street food stand and a cookery school.

Open for bookings:

Friday 27th September 7.30pm at the Food Festival

  • Do you like the sound of learning to make Guinean Peanut Butter Stew in your own home?
  • What about having a lesson with an experienced Bangladeshi chef as he teaches you how to make curry from Dhaka?
  • Or what about having a go at making Ukrainian Vareniki dumplings, taught by a refugee chef from York?

Yahala-at-Home is here for you. Through our online cookery school our Refugee and Asylum Seeker Chefs will teach you how to cook from their home so that you can enjoy the taste of it in your own home.
